Technology Feast

9/12/2012

With the supervision and leadership of the tech teaching team, MC School has undergone two new technological pilot projects that directly impact student learning.

In the past we have taken steps towards making technology a living and breathing part of the school. One past project was the integration of robotics as part of our elective classes. Robotics allows students to delve into the world of S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math), in creating useful robots.

This year we have continued our technological growth with two projects: the purchase of two Promethean Smart Boards and one mobile computer labs.

We will be hearing about their experiences, and that of teachers in the future- so as as community we can reflect about how these tools have supported learning at MC School.

Another new technological addition to MC School  is the purchase of one mobile computer labs. In plain english, a mobile lab is a cart with 25 computers plugged into it that can move from classroom to classroom.

Many of our students are already astute computer users- the next step in their learning is to use them in new ways to expand both their academic and intellectual learning. By having computers that move from classroom to classroom, students will have new technological tools to aid their learning at the tip of their fingers. Teachers will be able to plan lessons in which students can automatically duplicate classroom collaborative understanding.

As part of it's definition, technology is always in progress. There are other new projects that are in the  making that will have a positive effect on student learning.  We'll keep you posted!

Let the Children Play...

Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.

All members of our MC School family said, "We need more space for children to play outdoors."

We have have responded to this request by not only purchasing more land, but also conditioning it for dynamic outdoor learning at all developmental ages.

Some of the questions that we asked ourselves were, "How can we increase the space for all different ages to play? How can we reduce the noise level by separating spaces and using natural elements? Where can students congregate? How can we create a space that invites both for relaxation, study, discovery, and energy?"

Some of the elements we decided to include were the benches around the trees, not only to provide shaded seating, but also as a way to emphasize on nature.

Many elementary, middle school, and high school students wanted more playing fields, which is why a very large part of the new land  for a new soccer field, which will later be covered with artificial grass.

The fountain adds a relaxing water element to the playground, and also provides a place of discovery for young children.

Another place of discovery is the tree house that is still under construction, which not only satisfies our own childhood dreams, but will serve as an outdoor classroom that will foster children's learning. The playground is a place of interaction, of activity, of learning. It is a valuable moment, which we want to emphasize and respect.

During a school day, when you go outside you will find a circle of students reading a book, others creating their own relay races out of unusual materials, others painting trees, and yet others sitting around a tree with friends laughing and enjoying their time.

"LOST IN MADNESS" ICEBREAKER

This year's Icebreaker, held on Friday September 7th, 2012 was welcome back mixer held for Middle School and High School students. This year’s theme was "Lost in Madness".

The 11th graders spent their afterschool and recess time  the week prior to the icebreaker to create decorations from reused and recycled paper. They all worked hard to create an event which would be fun for the High School Students, but welcoming for the middle schoolers.

They made it a point to integrate both levels and to unite the Middle and High School student community.

Ms. Nyitray and Ms. Rivera are very proud of the Class of 2014.

Preschool classrooms have taken on a new look!

After copious studying of how the environment can serve as a "third teacher" for all children, especially those in early childhood, MC School's early childhood team led in the innovative project of transforming the classrooms, and in the mist redefining the meaning of early childhood and education.

What is our image of the child, and what are we doing to advocate for this image? One of the answers is in our environment.
