The National Honor Society is the leader among organizations and societies that promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. MCSchool’s Chapter name is Excellentia.

The purpose of the National Honor Society is:

  1. To create enthusiasm for scholarship
  2. To stimulate a desire to render service
  3. To promote leadership
  4. To develop character

 

Selection Procedures:

  1. To be eligible for membership, the candidate must be a member of the10th, 11th, or 12th grade.
  2. The candidate must have been in attendance at the school for at least one school year.
  3. The selection of the member to the Excellentia chapter will be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council.
  4. The candidates will be considered based on their service, leadership, and character.

 

The following areas will be considered:

  1. Scholarship:
    1. The minimum GPA allowable is 85% or 3.0.
    2. Based on a student’s cumulative GPA. This refers to the total academic performance as demonstrated by the grades received by the student while in attendance at the actual school.
  2. Leadership:
    1. This criteria is considered highly important for membership selection.
    2. Leadership defines as the number of positions a student has held in school or community organization as well as effective participation in positions of responsibility in other activities (athletic team captain, student council member, etc).
    3. Demonstrate initiative in promoting school activities.
    4. Is dependable in any responsibility accepted.

 

  1. Service:
    1. Actions undertaken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation.
    2. Contributions a candidate has made to school, classmates, and community as well as the student’s attitude toward service.
  1. Character:
    1. A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
    2. In order to demonstrate character, the candidate must show an outstanding record of conduct and behavior with regard to school and community rules, guidelines, and policies or be able to demonstrate sufficient growth and improvement to compensate for previous inadequacies.

 

Membership Benefits

Some of the immediate benefits for students include the following:
- A private induction ceremony.
- Each member is presented with a membership card and pin at the induction ceremony.
- A patch from the NHS is worn at graduation.
- Letters of recommendation from the National Honor Society.

Membership in the NHS is the highest honor that MCSchool can bestow upon a student, and is a prestigious public recognition of outstanding student achievement.

Member Responsibilities

- Maintain the standards by which they were elected.
- Attend regular Excellentia Chapter meetings which will be held approximately once per month.
- Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Members will be asked to pay annual chapter dues.
- Respect the rights and beliefs of others and will treat others with courtesy and consideration.
- Participate in the chapter service project.
- In addition to the chapter service project, members are to engage in additional service according to their own talents and interests.
