First through fifth grades shall constitute the elementary school.
The school shall provide a plan of formal instruction in all
elementary grades including but not limited to: English, Science,
Mathematics, Computer Literacy, Health and family life,
History/Social Science, Lengua Española, Ciencias Sociales, Cívica,
Music, Art, and Physical Education.
The program design shall
include the provision for a variety of scheduling patterns such as
self-contained classes, the assignment of groups of students to a
team of teachers, and some departmentalized classes. The predominant
mode of scheduling shall be forty-five to ninety minute segments of
instruction. School curriculum guides shall be prepared to embrace
the organization and content objectives in the various subject
areas. An integrated subject approach to instruction based upon
themes shall be promoted at the elementary level. Theme study time
shall be scheduled for the specific purpose of providing an
opportunity for teachers to correlate the skills and concepts
relating to a chosen theme from various subject areas and convey
those skills/concepts to the students through small and large group
activities. The program design shall also contemplate center and
circle time activities to teach students both social skills and
concepts related to the academic curriculum.
